In a disturbing incident, people in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district were spotted taking selfies with a sick leopard and even trying to ride the distressed animal. The incident was caught on camera and shared widely on social media, prompting forest officials to take action.

The video shows people, some of them holding sticks, standing or sitting near the leopard, touching it and taking pictures. A man can even be seen trying to ride the animal while walking.

After the incident came to light, the leopard was rescued by forest officials and taken to a zoo in Indore city. According to forest officials, the big cat is suffering from a brain disorder and is in a critical condition, fighting for its life.

“The leopard was rescued on Tuesday from Iklera village, about 80 km from Indore,” said Vikas Mahore, superintendent of the Kheoni sanctuary in Dewas under the forest ministry. He further warned people to avoid going near the sick wild animal in the future for their own safety.

“The body of a seriously ill leopard becomes rigid and the animal has seizures every 20 minutes. Prima facie, the animal is suffering from some brain disorder,” said Dr Uttam Yadav, in-charge of Indore’s Kamla Nehru Zoo.

“This is the first time we have seen that despite being mistreated by the villagers, the leopard did not roar at them or resist their attempts. This is very shocking because no matter how sick and weak big cats are, they never give up their built-in nature of resistance when they are in trouble,” he added.
