Reportedly, they all were friends and students who were duct-taped, stabbed, beaten, and beheaded after meeting the Mexican drug cartel in the hope of getting employment as private security, met a contact in town and were not seen again until the video leaked on the internet.

El Universal journalist Carlos Arrieta said the men decided into a meeting with the CJNG cartel (Jalisco Nueva Generacion).
