United’s Karina Mejia went down under to Australia to represent the United States of America at the New South Wales International Challenge at the Blacktown Softball Stadium. Mejia relished the opportunity to represent the USA in international competition.

“It was an awesome experience playing with girls from all over the states against different countries, amazing,” Mejia said. “As soon as I met my teammates, we had this instant bond which was wonderful because we didn’t know each other yet other than group chatting. We faced challenging teams but as we went on, it proved we were able to fight together and take home the gold. Overall this experience was life changing because it opened my eyes to the fact that there is so much more than people think of the word softball.”

Mejia, who normally plays for the Lady Longhorns, was recruited by the University of Texas-Dallas head softball coach Kelly Archer to play third and first base for Team USA in Australia. She was the only player from Laredo selected out of five players from Texas. The team was coached by Jim Walker.

On July 3, Mejia headed down under to play in Australia. Mejia and Team USA went 8-2 in the tournament with Mejia going 3-for-3 in the semifinals matchup after dropping a bunt with an RBI, a double with two RBIs and a single.
